About this calculator.

This tool projects a portfolio from its current balance forward to a chosen retirement age, assuming consistent monthly contributions and a fixed rate of return. It then applies a chosen withdrawal rate to estimate sustainable retirement income.

Two notes worth keeping in mind. The four percent guideline commonly referenced in retirement planning is a starting point, not a rule. Appropriate withdrawal rates vary with portfolio composition, expected longevity, spending flexibility, and market conditions. Real retirement income planning also involves Social Security, pensions, taxable versus tax-advantaged account structure, and strategies for managing sequence-of-returns risk in the early retirement years, none of which this calculator addresses.
