About this calculator.
This tool projects the future value of a portfolio that receives an initial lump-sum contribution and regular monthly contributions, compounded at a fixed assumed annual rate of return. It shows the mathematical effect of time, discipline, and compounding on a long-horizon investment.
A few notes on how to use it well. The rate of return is a general assumption, and actual returns on any specific investment vary, sometimes by a lot. Longer horizons of twenty to forty years tend to show the power of compounding most clearly. The calculator does not account for inflation, taxes, fees, or sequence-of-returns risk, all of which matter in real planning.
